How the ATAR Works
HSC Marks
Each subject gives a mark out of 100 from school assessment and final exams. You need 10+ units including 2 units of English.
Scaling
UAC adjusts marks for subject difficulty. High-scaling subjects like Maths Ext 2, Physics and Chemistry tend to scale up.
Best 10 Units
UAC takes your best 10 units (incl. 2 English) to form an aggregate, converted to an ATAR percentile rank out of 99.95.
Tips to Improve Your ATAR
Maximise your English mark
English is compulsory and counts towards every ATAR. Even a small improvement can lift your overall result significantly.
Understand scaling
Subject choice matters, but performance matters more. A high mark in any subject beats a low mark in a high-scaling one.
Start early
Consistent effort from Year 11 builds the foundations needed for strong Year 12 results.
Get targeted support
One-on-one tutoring can push you from Band 4 to 5, or Band 5 to 6, in your weakest subjects.
Important Disclaimer
This ATAR calculator provides an estimate only. Actual ATAR calculations by UAC use complex, year-specific scaling algorithms and data that are not publicly available. The scaling factors used in this tool are simplified approximations based on historical trends. For official ATAR information, visit uac.edu.au.
